Mixmasters I & II

In 2001 and 2002, Vera C Ritter created VJ-mixes for the groundbreaking and innovative audiovisuals series ‘Mixmasters.TV’. conceived and produced by London´s Addicitive TV, it was the first music show to put VJs onto broadcast television. ‘Mixmasters’ featured episodes of two 10 minute exclusive DJ–sets from independent record labels mixed with innovative visuals, motion graphics and animations by VJs.

“’Mixmasters: PIAS & V-CR Mix’ (2001) combines a Breakbeat music mix by London DJ and music producer Wayward Soul with Club Visuals by digital imaging artist and VJ V-CR aka Vera C. Ritter. V-CR´s visuals transport the urban vibe of Wayward Soul´s Breakbeat extravaganza: with rhythmically driven intensity, the DJ/ VJ mix picks up on the restless and fragmented experience merged with the diversity of world cultural influences unique for London and British urban youth culture.

Club Visuals and VJ-culture established themselves relatively unnoticed by the mainstream as an own experimental film/video art genre. in a great diversity of styles, the VJ´s focus lies in enhancing the Club experience which has music as its central driving force. Born out of this live-context, Club Visuals art aims for immediacy and impact paced and fuelled by the music, dancers and nightlife excitement. For this, it takes on inspiration from any usuable genre at hand: Cutup TV-culture, Experimental Film and Video art, DJ-techniques such as looping and mixing, urban youth culture, graffity and graphic art, Multimedia-Show elements and alike.” (release notes, Pias & VCR mix 2001)

Mixmasters brought together many of the foremost VJs and visuals creators in the UK and beyond. the format first aired on ITV-Channel in Britain 2001, where it ran successfully and with several followup editions until 2005. it was also screened in various other countries.

‘Mixmasters I’ V-CR mix was among those being released on a DVD series by Moonshine label (US), and also screened at festivals, including Filmfest München´s 2002 ‘video art & experimental film’-section.

d_ 2001 und -02 schuf Vera C Ritter alias V-CR VJ-mixes für die wegweisende audiovisuelle clubfernsehserie ‘Mixmasters.TV’. entwickelt und produziert von London´s Addictive TV für den britischen fernsehkanal ITV brachte das innovative format erstmals die arbeit von VJ´s –’Video Jockeys’ ins fernsehen. ‘Mixmasters’ zeigte in jeder folge 2 zehnminütige exklusive DJ-mixes unabhängiger

musiklabels, zu der innovative visuals, motion graphics und animationen in verschiedensten stilen von VJ´s abgemischt wurden.

Geboren aus dem Live-Kontext schöpft diese extrem vielfältige Kunstform ihre Einflüsse aus dem

experimentellen Film, Videokunst und TV-Versatzstücken, aus Techniken der DJ-Kultur wie loopen und mixen, aus urbaner Jugendkultur, Graffity und grafischer Kunst bis hin zu Multimedia Show-Elementen.” (pressetext, Pias & VCR mix 2001) Die Londoner Addictive TV produzierten „Mixmasters.TV“ als eine erste serie solcher DJ/ VJ- kollaborationen für TV und DVD, um das spektrum und die lebendige atmosphäre multimedialer clubkultur einzufangen, deren innovative Impulse sonst nur live erlebbar sind. ‘Mixmasters’ wurde so erfolgreich, daß es von einem pilotprojekt zu seiner musikfernseh-institution entwickelte und in mehreren serien von jeweils 15 folgen von 2001 bis 2005 auf ITV lief. ausstrahlungen auf einer reihe weiterer internationaler fernsehsender folgten, wie auch ein DVD-release auf dem US-label Moonshine u.a. mit dem ‘Pias & V-CR mix’; auf festivals lief dieses u.a. dem Filmfest München 2002 in seiner sektion ‘video art & experimental film’.
